This month's Project cornerstone book is "Rene has two last names" by René Colato Laínez.

The focus of this book is to help students learn to respect different cultural customs and traditions, understand the importance of maintaining customs, and have an inclusive mindset. Culture is a shared system of meanings, beliefs, values, and behaviors through which we interpret our experiences. It is learned, collective, and changes over time. Each of us has a cultural identity. This makes us unique and contributes to diversity in our communities.

For the month's discussion:

1.Talk about your family history.

2. Call a grandparent or great grandparent or other relatives and ask about something from their life.

3. Tell your child the story about how you decided what their name would be.

4. Ask if your child would like to change their name. What would it be? Why?

5. How does it make you feel when someone knows your name? How does it make you feel when someone doesn't know your name?

This is the English version to the book.

This is the Spanish version of the book.

Gift Card Donation

I hope you and your families are staying healthy during this unprecedented time    As you may know, there are several families in our district that need help to meet some basic needs.  The district is providing 2 meals a day M-F.  With kids being home from school, some families need more support for providing dinner and weekend meals.    There is a critical need for gift cards for these families to use for food.  If you are able, please consider donating a gift card to families in our own district.  Thanks so much for your help!  Let’s show these families some Huff Love!

Things to remember:

Gift cards should only be for Safeway and should be electronic.   (

Electronic gift cards should be sent to our principal, Arline Siam at and she will send them on to the district office for distribution.

Families are welcome to donate more than 1 gift card.  Each individual gift card should be no more than $20 to make it easier to split them up among many families.

If you have any questions, please contact Aishwarya Rengan at
