May Better Together Infographic

May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, which celebrates the histories of Americans hailing from across the Asian continent and from the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. May 7, 1843, marks the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States. And May 10, 1869, or Golden Spike Day, recognizes the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in the U.S., which had significant contributions from Chinese workers. AAPI Heritage Month gives us a chance to celebrate and center the unique journey of all AAPI immigrants and citizens in the United States and their unique life experiences, traditions, and cultures. Please see the attached flyers or visit http://mvwsd.org/bettertogetherMVWSD.

MVWSD seeking District Equity Advisory Committee members

MVWSD is continuing our work by engaging meaningfully with the community on issues of equity through the District Equity Advisory Committee (DEAC). The goal of the DEAC is to provide feedback to the Superintendent on how to support MVWSD towards achieving its goals of becoming a more equitable and inclusive school district.

We are seeking a combination of district-level leaders, principals, teachers, staff members, and parent participants who represent the interests of both elementary and middle schools. Committee members will be expected to attend and participate virtually in meetings held monthly (on average) online during the 2022-23 school year in the evening hours. The average commitment will be approximately 20 hours per academic school year.

Applications are due by June 3 and found at this link. More information is at https://www.mvwsd.org/about/committees.

PTA NEWS:

THIS IS THE WEEK!
Our spring carnival EAGLEFEST is this Friday evening, May 13, from 5:00 to 8:00pm. Come join the Imai community for a night of fun and games, food and music. It's free to attend (other than some food for sale) and open to all students/staff and their families!

Everything you need to know is below, and first, make note of these important action items:

· PARENTS: If you haven't already, please sign up for one (or more) 30-minute shift so we can keep our activities open for the duration of the event. If you HAVE already signed up, THANK YOU, and make sure to report to your station on time!

· KIDS/FAMILIES: Sign up in advance to sing Karaoke with DJ Purple, or at least request some songs you want to hear playing during the event! The DJ's full song list is here, a short list of popular songs is here, and our Karaoke/Playlist signup sheet is here.

WHAT'S AT
EAGLEFEST? Previously known as Hawkfest, this is a fun-filled carnival with inflatable slides and obstacle courses, a climbing wall, face/arm painting, a cake walk, carnival games, arts/crafts, a photo booth, DJ/music, and food/drink for purchase at food trucks. And we’re happy to announce a special performance from the MVHS Color Guard at 6pm!

CHECK-IN REQUIRED (5-7pm):
We ask all families to have a completed PTA waiver on file. You may have already completed one earlier in the year at Beautification Day or at our Spring Walkathon. All families should check in at the MUR when you arrive, and if the waiver is confirmed or completed, the kids will receive wristbands which will be required for some of our Eaglefest activities. To save time at Eaglefest, a "pre-check" will be available after school on Friday, outside the front office and at the back gate on Carol Ave.

COVID PROTOCOL:
We are following the current MVWSD guidelines; outdoor masking is optional, but we do recommend masks for safety given the expected crowd size.

EAGLEFEST SAFETY GUIDELINES:

· Children cannot attend without a responsible adult also in attendance. Please establish a meeting point in case you get separated from your kids.

· No pets, please! Eaglefest is only for humans.

· We will not have a first aid station, but first aid supplies will be on hand at Check-In.

· Kids must follow safety instructions from parent volunteers at the inflatables, and wristbands are required for all inflatables and the climbing wall.
