06/02/21 Huff n Stuff

Principal’s Message:

Dear Huff Families,

It’s the last week of school and what a year it has been! As a team, we have come together to make the distance learning and hybrid learning experience beneficial for our students. Thank you from all of us for hanging in there as we learned to navigate uncharted waters. We couldn’t have done it without everyone’s support.

Summer Challenge

This summer your child has the opportunity to keep their chromebooks and use the apps on Clever to continue improving their reading and math skills. We also have a summer challenge available for all students to earn some cool school swag. The more you do the more points you earn. All prices will be awarded in August.

Instructions

  1. Login to Clever using your Clever badge or username and password and use any of the learning apps.

  2. Practice for 15-20 minutes daily.

  3. Your child can also submit a google form for reading books, working on workbooks, etc...

  4. Submit a google form with your minutes. The google survey can be submitted daily or weekly.

  5. Clever will be shut off in the middle of July but you can continue to earn points by using BrainPop, Raz Kids, Khan Academy, reading books, etc…

If you are not returning to Huff next year, please make sure you turn in your chromebook to the office. Students moving on to Graham or Crittenden can keep their chromebooks but if you are moving out of the area, please return it and if you haven’t told us yet, please send us an email notifying us that you will not be attending Huff next school year.

Have a wonderful week! Stay safe and healthy.

Sincerely,

MVWSD Summer is here!

Every family's summer plans are different, but our district recommends that all students do some academic practice daily to keep their skills sharp in preparation for next year. MVWSD Summer is a collection of programs to help students maintain their academic skills, keep them connected to learning technology, and access free meals all summer long. These self- and parent-directed programs keep students in a routine during the summer and will go a long way to preventing learning loss. On i-Ready this summer, students will have both personalized lessons that their teachers have chosen for them, and lessons tailored to their needs based on assessment data.

Look for an email soon from MVWSD or click on https://www.mvwsd.org/summer to learn more. Attached are flyers outlining students’ steps for a productive summer and for easy access to all of the programs’ links.

Returning students can keep Chromebooks this summer. Non-returning students should bring them back

Thank you for your support of the District’s Chromebook program and distance learning this year. If your student is not returning to a MVWSD school next year, please return your student’s Chromebook to your school office by June 11, 2021 (or sooner). Students who will return to MVWSD schools can keep Chromebooks this summer. Students who are moving on to MVLA and plan to use their Chromebooks in high school are welcome to keep them. We will send specific instructions on how 8th-graders can access the MVLA network on their current Chromebooks.

Chromebooks will not be usable by students who are not enrolled in MVWSD or MVLA next year.

School offices are open weekdays from 7:30 a.m.- 4 p.m. When dropping off, please wear a mask and practice social distancing. For questions, please contact Jon Aker at [email protected].

District Wireless Hotspots

If you have a district-issued wireless hotspot and your student will not be returning to MVWSD next school year, OR if he/she no longer needs the hotspot, please return it to your school office by Friday, June 11, 2021 so that it can be reassigned to other students who need it. Thank you!

Next year: what school will look like

Wondering what school will look like in the fall? While we can't predict with certainty, here are the conditions that we anticipate will be in place in August 2021: English (http://mvw.sd/hVTcH) and Spanish (http://mvw.sd/NXd0a). MVWSD will communicate with families over the summer as we receive more guidance from public health officials.

Internet Service financial support available

Is your child approved to receive free or reduced-price school breakfast or lunch? If so, your household may qualify for the Emergency Broadband Benefit.

The Emergency Broadband Benefit Program (EBB Program) is a temporary federal program that launched on May 12, 2021 to help eligible households pay for internet service during the pandemic. For students whose families are struggling to afford their monthly internet service, this program may be able to help. Visit GetEmergencyBroadband.org for more information.

CalFresh Program for grocery assistance

Need help buying groceries? You might qualify for CalFresh, a free EBT card you can use to buy food at most stores and select online retailers. If you receive CalFresh benefits, you may also be eligible for P-EBT, a grocery benefit that provides $375 per child 18 and under over the summer months. To find out if you qualify, call 1-800-984-3663, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or scan the QR code (flyer attached) to request a call. We speak English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Mandarin and Tagalog. Second Harvest can also connect you to other food programs in your community.

The Yearbook Has Arrived!

The new yearbook has arrived! Huff is the only school in the entire district (elementary OR middle school) with a yearbook this year. This is a really great memento your child can look back on or share about how it was to have school during COVID. Since there weren’t typical fall portraits this is a way to also remember all the kids in your child’s class as there are portraits and a group photo for each class. (Our teachers helped a lot!) We really love the uniqueness of each page and it really represented the feel of the year.

Order a Yearbook!

You can still order a yearbook now for $20 (before shipping).
